Capricorn Books began life in an antique co-op in 1995, starting with one room in a lovely Victorian house in a small village in southern Ontario, before expanding into a second room and then finally moving to its own premises in Oakville on Lake Ontario in 1997.
The business was a success from opening day, even though it was a bit hidden in its half-basement location with a set of curving stairs to the front door. While maintaining a general stock of literature, art reference, history and children's books, there were always some fine bindings, first editions and esoteric titles on hand. The combination of a number of fortunate purchases and a family interest lead to a semi-specialization in military books that continues to this day, with a large percentage of stock now in the numerous subject catalogues in this area. Vintage children's books are also well represented.
In 1999, Capricorn Books began its internet presence and after two years internet sales had taken over to such a degree that the open store presence was closed...at least for the time being! With the owner's backgrounds in library science, quality assurance, finance and business management, the love of books combines with a desire to offer excellent quality in all stages of the book selling process. From detailed descriptions to careful packaging, the goal is to provide customers with a pleasant buying experience and the number of repeat buyers seems to indicate that goal is usually met.With almost 90 catalogues in a wide variety of subject areas, and new listings being added constantly (most with scans attached), we hope customers will enjoy browsing our stock whenever they visit!
