Samuel Castle and Amos Cooke arrived in the Sandwich Islands in 1837 as lay members of the " Seventh Reinforcement" of missionaries in Hawaii. Castle became the business agent for the missionary contingent and Cooke became head of the Royal School whose pupils included five future Hawaiian monarchs. Castle & Cooke started as a humble business partnership in 1851 with a general store and later expanded to sugar, shipping and pineapple and eventually to bananas, seafood and other lines to become a worlwide leader in the food industry.
